Cast of Characters

Janie Mae Crawford: The main character of the novel. She is a very independent and high spirited woman. She has beautiful straight hair even though she is half African American. 

Nanny Crawford: Janie’s grandmother. Nanny believes that Janie should settle with a rich man for financial stability because of Nanny’s unstable financial situation as a slave. 

Leafy Crawford: Janie’s mother who left her with Nanny right after she gave birth to Janie.

Mr. & Mrs. Washburn: Nanny’s employers. Janie was raised with their children. Janie and Nanny lived in a little cottage house on their land.

Phoeby Watson: Janie’s best friend in Eatonville.  Phoeby almost always defends Janie when others are talking about her.

Logan Killicks: Janie’s first husband. Nanny set her up with Logan because Logan is a very wealthy man and Nanny wanted Janie to be well off. Janie ends up leaving Logan because she felt unloved.

Jody Starks: Janie’s second husband. He strives and needs power. At first he spoils Janie and gives her everything that she wants, but then he begins to treat her like an object and becomes very possessive over her. He eventually beats her to prove that he is stronger than her.

Sam Watson: Phoeby’s husband.  Sam often is in the conversations on Jody’s front porch. Sam often defends Jody when others are talking bad about him and says without Jody the town wouldn’t be the way it is.

Hezekiah Potts: Jody’s Assistant Shopkeeper at his store. Hezekiah worked with Janie.

Dr. Simmons: Janie called this doctor for help when Jody was sick.

Tea Cake: Janie’s third husband. Tea Cake is truly Janie’s first true love. He is very nice and respects Janie for who she is. He is 12 years younger than Janie. 

Mrs. Turner: She lives in the Everglades. Her pride and joy is her Caucasian features. She adores Janie because of her straight Caucasian like hair and features.

Annie Tyler: A wealthy widow.

Who Flung: Annie Tyler’s much younger fiancé who took her money and ran.

Motor Boat: A friend of Janie and Tea Cake.  He stuck with them during the hurricane.
